🧳 Exporting Electric Golf Carts: Logistics and Tariffs - Do not Wait Until Shipping to Find Out

Many buyers nail down the product and price, then hit hidden traps during the shipping phase. Export logistics and tariffs are way more complicated than most people expect.

Which Shipping Method to Choose?

1. Container Shipping (FCL)

Best for large-volume shipments with the lowest cost.

  • 20ft container: 4-6 units of 4-seat golf carts
  • 40ft container: 10-14 units of 4-seat golf carts
  • Suitable for mature markets and bulk orders

2. Less than Container Load (LCL)

Choose this when your volume doesn't fill a container.

  • Higher cost than FCL
  • Requires unpacking and distribution at destination port
  • Suitable for trial orders and small batches

3. Roll-on/Roll-off (Ro-Ro)

Dedicated vessel shipping for vehicles with relatively simpler customs procedures.

  • Best for North America and Middle East markets
  • High loading/unloading efficiency
  • Limited routes—not available at all ports

Tariffs and Customs Clearance: Avoid These Traps

Research your target market's tariff rates in advance!

Tariffs vary dramatically across Southeast Asia, Middle East, and Africa:

  • Some African countries: tariffs as high as 30%-50%
  • Europe: EV tariff quotas apply
  • North America: Anti-subsidy duty risks

Recommendation: Confirm import tariff rates and customs requirements for your target market before negotiating price.

Certifications Determine Whether You Can Clear Customs

Without proper certifications, your cargo becomes worthless scrap at the destination port.

Basic certifications:

  • CE (Europe) / FCC (USA) / EEC (Australia)

Battery certifications:

  • UN38.3 (transportation safety)
  • UL2580 (North America)
  • IEC62619 (Europe)

Vehicle certifications:

  • Market-specific certifications (DOT, E-Mark, etc.)

A supplier without proper certifications—no matter how low the cost—should not be engaged.

How to Negotiate Payment Terms?

For initial cooperation:

  • 30% deposit + 70% against Bill of Lading copy
  • Avoid accepting "ship first, pay later" arrangements—too risky
  • Letter of Credit (L/C) or trusted third-party payment is preferable

Find a Reliable Freight Forwarder

Many unreliable forwarders won't tell you about:

  • Incorrect customs declaration product names (golf carts have multiple HS codes)
  • Non-compliant battery packaging (UN3480 regulations)
  • Under-declaration leading to inspection and seizure

Find a forwarder with EV export experience—it saves a lot of headaches.
