🎯 Canton Fair Negotiation Tips: How to Judge a Supplier in 30 Minutes

Time is limited at the Canton Fair. How do you quickly determine if a supplier is worth a deeper conversation? Here are some proven methods.

Step 1: Look at the Booth, Not Just the Size

Booth size tells you something, but not everything.

  • Large booth with actual products on display: Not necessarily the best, but at least shows some investment
  • Nothing but business cards to hand out: Be wary—could be a trading company

More importantly: Look at whether their exhibits are self-produced or sourced from subcontractors. Weld quality, battery brand labels, overall craftsmanship—these speak volumes.

Step 2: Ask Tough Questions

Don't ask "How's your quality?"—everyone will give you a positive answer.

Try these questions instead:

  • "Have you exported to XX country before? Do you have certifications for that market?"
  • "What are the BMS protection parameters for this battery pack?"
  • "What brand is the controller? Did you develop it yourself?"
  • "What's your typical delivery time? How do you handle delays?"

Suppliers who can answer these directly have real export experience. If they hesitate or dodge, be careful.

Step 3: Ask for Factory Videos or Photos

If they claim to be a factory, ask for:

  • Real factory video footage (production lines, warehouses, offices)
  • Export packaging photos (to see how they handle export packaging)
  • Inspection reports or container loading photos

Manufacturers with real export experience have these materials ready to show.

Step 4: Compare Prices, But Don't Focus Solely on Price

Way too low quotes are a red flag—but way too high doesn't guarantee quality either.

The right approach: Get a complete specification sheet with all component brands, models, and quantities. Then compare 2-3 suppliers using the same sheet. You'll quickly spot who's overpricing and who's being honest.

Step 5: Check After-Sales Commitments

Ask about after-sales specifics:

  • "How long does it take to get spare parts?"
  • "Do you have a service network in XX market?"
  • "What's the warranty period? Is battery and vehicle warranty calculated separately?"

If the after-sales terms are vague or they just say "Don't worry, it'll be fine"—proceed with caution.
